Book Review – Deep South by Paul Theroux

This book gives terrific insight into this part of the United States. A different type of civil war continues as states like Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas live like third world countries in the small towns off main highways. As a Canadian I appreciate the many differences: college football as religion, popular gun shows, churches everywhere and the continued black-white issue. Paul drives the back roads and meets many friendly people who accept this curious Yankee to their land of swamps, poverty, despair and hope.
