18 Holes Should be 19

Are you coming in for a drink? No, I’ve got to get going…I feel if you have time for 4 hours to play you have 4 hours and 15 at least. The drink following the round is an extension to the round. It symbolizes the de-brief of your day’s play, the stories of the sunk putt and lost ball, and the diverse topics that can randomly jump to many places. Play links golf and you wouldn’t dare leaving without a pint or drink of choice (but take your hat off in the historic clubhouse). Golf is comradeship as much as it is playing a game.  Conversations in the clubhouse after a leisure or business game will connect you more deeply to stranger, friend and competitor. Players may be too focused on golf during the match. You do have time to come in for even a short time if you make it an important component and see golf as 19 holes. Yes, you may have to go home to cut the grass or do another household chore. However, as my late father Sam Morgan said to me as a young lad, “20 years from now it won’t matter”. And “it” means the chore and not the animated discussion in the clubhouse with drink in hand and laughs shared.
