Shinnecock or Erin Hills for a U.S. Open?

|

In one of my Golf Shorts and Plus Fours chapters I compare the Old Course vs. Pebble. I prefer the Old because it oozes tradition and is idiosyncratic not because it is a prettier course. I feel the U.S. Open should have venues like historic Oakmont or Shinnecock rather than newer Erin Hills or Chambers Bay. I like par being the score to beat. This tournament should be different. Hard and unforgiving. Deep rough should penalize and hitting skinny fairways rewarded. Power golf is winning nowadays and should take a respite this week. Hopefully 2 over par wins in 2018. Turn the clock back.
