The pandemic has created a window for an influx of golfers to try this fantastic social spacing sport. The question is whether they are taking lessons, reading about golf’s history, learning clubhouse manners and understanding dress codes. Or, are new golfers more interested in investing time and money to purchase the newest clubs, clothing or range finders? When I started at 5 years old, our club professional took us out to the range to teach fundamentals like the grip and hitting 7-irons with old clubs. My father instilled in me to understand the etiquette of the game, be polite and remove headgear in the clubhouse to show respect. I was to develop character, absorb both good and bad breaks, help others look for errant shots and not step on putting lines, There is nothing wrong with getting the latest and greatest gear. However, if you do not learn and embrace golf’s infrastructure first, how do you expect to have a proper golf house? Before launching your drive on a 6500 yard course Invest in reading classic golf books, watch vintage videos of Seve winning the Open Championship and chat with veteran golfers for their insight. You will enjoy the game that much more and so will members in your foursome.
