Wouldn’t you rather compare the Old Course and Pebble Beach rather than these COVID-19 variants? Dream inspiring golf travel. In my Golf Shorts and Plus Fours book of short golf stories, Hole No. 11 analyzes these 2 golfing treasures and make golfers ponder. The drive on No. 1, 17 and 18 on the Old. How about the tee shot on 7, the 2nd on 8 and of course, the drive on 18? The Old to me is not beautiful in that Oxford Dictionary way. It is magnificent for its course architecture and intriguing holes where angles of attack are important. History envelops you and ghosts are felt. Pebble is sparkling on many holes and the setting spectacular. There is West Sands Beach and Chariots of Fire. Then there is California beach and surf dudes. Old Tom Morris with a mashie niblick. Bing Crosby with a pipe and another song. I was fortunate to play both courses with my three best friends in back to back years. We walked both and had caddies so we could soak in these special experiences with broad smiles. I went left on the Road Hole drive purposely. I hooked my second shot on 18 into the Pacific Ocean unintentionally. I choose the Old Course for its historic significance, my Scottish heritage and well, the place, the Home of Golf. I can see why people would choose Pebble. The Golden Bear states that Pebble would be his course if he had to play one. Tiger and Jack won on both courses. Two golfing legends and two great golf courses. Which one is your choice?
