Vancouver—Not Usually for the Golf

Sure, there are good public golf courses in Vancouver proper and outlying regions like North Vancouver (Northlands) and Surrey (Morgan Creek). And if you get the call to play private golf clubs like Stanley Thompson’s treasure at Capilano in West Van or Shaughnessy in Vancouver then say an emphatic, “Yes Sir” like Verne Lundquist hollered when Jack drained that Masters putt. Golfers should spend their time at Whistler 90 minutes away to play the fantastic courses at Chateau Whistler, Nicklaus North, Whistler GC and Big Sky in Pemberton. However, when we send Athlone golf clients to beautiful Vancouver it is more about the many charms it possesses.

My recent journey from the smoky Okanagan Valley across the Coq Highway to visit family and friends allowed me to wander English Bay in the West End, the sea wall in West Van and charming sections of North Van. Stanley Park and Granville Island are must places to explore in the city. I saw the Rocky Mountaineer slowly pass me in a park, viewed large tankers idling in the ocean, admired the mountains, breathed in the famous BC bud on Denman Street and photographed the torch from the 2010 Olympics. All travellers should wander and soak in the cool vibe of Canada’s West Coast favourite city.
